"Songs of Summer" by Owen Blank

Hey, my name is Owen and I’m from Atlanta, GA. I come from a family of musicians, so music is something that’s been ingrained in me since an early age. In my life, music is as vital as food or air. Several of the happiest moments in my life involve screaming my favorite songs at the top of my lungs with friends or family. Whether at a concert or in the car, music brings me a ton of happiness. It makes the bad times better and the great times even greater. There are a ton of songs that I can tell you exactly where I was when I heard them last, because music has the ability to make memories -even if it's from ten years back. Music is rooted in my life and my memories, and it carries you through each season. Songs have different moods which can lend themselves to certain seasons. However, I think it can also be said the opposite way: that seasons can represent certain songs. For example, if you were to search on Spotify you would find plenty of curated lists for summertime songs, many of which are happy, up tempo or that invoke a fun, warm feeling. Holiday music would be another (maybe too obvious) example, where your ear can typically identify a Christmas song without even listening to the words. While I can’t really describe why, in a personal instance, I don’t listen to a lot of country music but when I do, it’s always in the summer. I think hearing certain songs can inspire and excite me no matter the season. I’m a warm weather person so when I hear summertime type music it makes me happy and in a good mood. However, I also love things such as the sound of a college marching band because it reminds me of football season, nice fall weather, tailgating, and family time. I’m sure if you don’t like those things then that could be kind of a downer, but I think it’s just different for everyone. There’s plenty of types of music out there so hopefully everyone has something that puts them in a good mood from time to time. :) As you head into this Labor Day weekend and celebrate the final days of summer, here are my own top 5 songs of summer 2023.
